Summer 2025 Chairman’s Message

By Gil Dickens

Hello to all the Mid-Atlantic Members!

We’re half way into 2025 and already I’ve been to two NCRS regionals, Florida and South Carolina, and MAC has had two very successful Judging Meets at Zip and Lindsay. It appears that changing our judging events from 1 to 2 days has made a difference. We’re able to provide more judging points to our local MAC judging Cadre, and at the same time we’ve attracted a greater number of judges from other locations and states too. In my memory I’ve never seen a better turnout than the meet this past May. We had well over 30 attendees and many judges. We also had 3 excellent cars; a completely original ’67 Coupe, a Concours-judged ’67 roadster and Scott Juergens’ beautiful 1989 GS-80 which he hurriedly prepared for our event…all cars looked great. I’m a believer in the Concours Class of Judging because it opens our venue to a much broader population of Corvette owners with diverse interests. I enjoy talking with owners that modified their cars to “make it their own”, or sometimes inherited it from someone in the 60s, 70s and 80s that modified their cars for increased power or distinctive flares and looks. Their journeys and stories are just as important and emotional ties to that personalization are just as strong. It brings back memories of a 1967 400hp Roadster I restored. In my effort to track its history, I found that early in its time the engine had been swapped with a racing built big block, ported, and blueprinted, with flares, and stenciled on the doors in Gold Leaf was the title “Animal.” It raced in the 70s at Englishtown NJ and I understand it was a fast beast. But I went the original route and flighted it. Had Concours been around then, I’m not so sure I would have gone that route. I was glad to see these Concours cars at Lindsay that reflected pride and individual tastes of the owners, and I hope we see more of these cars. None of this would be possible without the members bringing cars and judging. I want to thank everyone for that.

Although we’re halfway in the year, we have a lot more activities in store. As I mentioned to others on arriving at a get together last Sunday, I hoped we could start selecting days where sunshine prevailed instead of rain. Zip was a downpour, Lindsay started rainy and cleared up, and a farewell gathering for Reto was a bit rainy too. BTW Reto is going back home to Switzerland as his embassy assignment is closing at the end of July. He’ll be at Willing Warriors. Take the time to say goodbye if you can. He’s been a great friend of MAC, and he promises to stay in touch. Rain is why our Summer Tour was postponed for two weeks to June 28th. We also have Willing Warriors on July 19th, with over 200 Corvettes and Wayne Carini, a full calendar with Carlisle in August, the National Convention and Turner Meet in September, and our Fall Road Tour in October. We’re also going to sneak-in a Road Tour in Gettysburg according to Jay Maxwell. Wyndham will do his Corvette Pot Luck again this summer, which is a treat, and we’ll have a Christmas Party again. We’ve still got two more regionals in St Louis and Texas as well. I’ll be going to those. If you like judging, or beautiful drives, get togethers, or looking at cars, there is something for everyone. John Essepian goes to Cars and Coffee – reach out to him if you’d like to attend. I expect they’ll be more sunshine coming up. Oh, and before I end, we have a big surprise on a Regional we’re planning for MAC. Read the article inside. We need volunteers for many things: Willing Warriors, Carlisle Tent recruiting, MAC table at the Convention, and a planned Region further out. So stay with us, get engaged and have fun. See you at your favorite events!
